Combinables

noun · design system · practice
/kəmˈbaɪnəbəlz/

Definition: A design system within HYPATIA where a single garment separates and rejoins into several different looks, held together by one button-only closure. Combinables names a way of making where interchangeability and a garment's return to the earth come from the same decision.

Etymology: From combine: to join two or more things into one.
Within HYPATIA, the term extends to describe a garment that can be taken apart and made whole again, as many times as its wearer chooses.

Practice: Combinables pieces are built from HYPATIA Serat and finished in Bettina's hand-drawn Batik Tulis or Sulam embroidery, then joined with a button-only closure made to open and close again and again, keeping every piece whole and ready for its next combination.

Material Expression
Combinables is visible in the closure. In the buttons that join one piece to the next. It separates cleanly. It allows each piece to remain itself, even while becoming part of another.

What Combinables Represents
Combinables represents deliberate production. A way of working where a single garment is asked to do more, so a wardrobe can hold fewer, more considered pieces.

Relational Nature
Combinables exists through relationship: between one printed panel and another, between a base garment and its extensions, between a piece's first life and its next one.

A Cumulative Quality
Combinables is built to be reconfigured over time. Through wear. Through new combinations. Through a closure made to outlast any single outfit. It develops through use.

Within HYPATIA
Combinables is the design logic behind the Original 17 and every membership garment that follows. It informs how a piece is cut, closed, and eventually returned to the earth.
