Why the Original 17 Are the Only Seventeen
Seventeen pieces carry the names of seventeen stars - Cassiopeia, Pleione and four of her daughters, Hyades, and the rest of a collection built from HYPATIA's very first material, before HYPATIA Serat had a steady way of being made. Hypatia of Alexandria, the woman this house is named for, was an astronomer among several other things - mathematician, philosopher, teacher - and the lines connecting these pieces to the sky above them aren't decoration. They're the same lines already running across the HYPATIA website: point to point, star to star, the way a constellation gets drawn.
Every one of the Original 17 was cut from R&D-phase material - the cloth HYPATIA was still learning to make, before the process settled into what now runs through every length of HYPATIA Serat produced today. Some of these seventeen pieces feel exactly like the finished pieces that follow them; others carry the texture of a process still mid-discovery - a firmer hand, a drape still finding its settle. That difference stays in the cloth deliberately, the actual record of the work in progress - the only record that exists, since by the time the process settled fully, the material that made these seventeen pieces no longer existed to be made again.
That's what makes the Original 17 the only seventeen there will ever be, in this exact form. The designs themselves carry forward - every piece a future member orders will share a name's design, Bettina's hand in the Batik Tulis or Sulam pattern, the same construction logic - just worked in the material HYPATIA makes today, rather than the material HYPATIA was still inventing.
Owning one of the Original 17 is less about owning a garment that repeats in a different size, and more about holding the one physical draft of how HYPATIA Serat came to be - closer to investing in a piece of HYPATIA's own early history than to buying a piece of clothing.
The Original 17 will go to new hands through an exclusive auction, in 2027. Where they land after that is wherever that handful of people choose to keep them - worn, or kept as an object in a room, the way any first draft of something lasting deserves to be kept.
